Live Wallpaper Guide: Resolution, Formats and Performance

A live wallpaper is a short video that loops quietly behind your icons. Because it keeps playing, the file you choose changes how smooth your device feels and how much battery it uses. This guide explains the basics.

Resolution

Match the wallpaper to your screen. Full HD (1920x1080) is enough for most laptops and monitors. 4K (3840x2160) looks sharper on large or high-density screens but needs a stronger graphics card and more storage. For phones, a vertical file that matches your screen ratio looks best.

Formats

  • MP4 (H.264): the safest choice. It plays almost everywhere and is light on the processor.
  • WebM: small files and good quality, supported by most modern players.
  • GIF: avoid for wallpapers. Files are large and colours are limited.

Frame rate and length

30 frames per second is smooth and gentle on the battery; 60 is silkier but costs more power. Short loops of 10 to 30 seconds keep files small, as long as the start and end match so the loop does not jump.

Performance tips

  • Pause the wallpaper when a game or full-screen app is running.
  • On a laptop, let the player pause on battery power.
  • If you notice stutter, try a lower resolution before anything else.
